Our first children, blue-eyed twins, were the apple of my eye. A boy and a girl, they arrived in the world when I was 29. So the relief at having children was overwhelming, and the happiness…beyond words. I remember trying to nurse one of them in the hospital delivery room as the other lay in a little plastic hospital bassinet on wheels, and thinking, I’ll never ever be unhappy again.
The twins were four months old when I discovered that I was expecting, and not yet two when their sister was born.
