On a Sunday morning in 1990, I sat in my sixth-grade classroom waiting for the bell to ring. My reverie was suddenly interrupted by the voice of our principal. “Girls, would anyone like to volunteer to help in a respite program for children with special needs next Sunday?”
Along with a few classmates, I eagerly raised my hand.
The next week, we showed up at the program. I wasn’t afraid of wiping noses or caring for “children” who were older than me. I loved their sweet smiles, gentle souls, and utter lack of artifice. I spent many more Sundays volunteering at the respite program, falling in love with Hashem’s most special children.
